We apologize for the lack of service. Comment spammers that appear to originate in China and Russia have been relentlessly attacking our news weblogs for the past two weeks. This has resulted in extreme traffic on our host server, sometimes causing all sites to stopped working from time to time.
Why is this happening? Apparently these people are tied to organized crime, and find it lucrative to flood company Web sites with spam, then contact the companies and suggest that they will go away if a sum of money is paid to them. Since bandwidth is expensive, and many smaller companies need a Web presence, they regretfully pay a fee to these cyber-protection racketeers.
To make sure our clients were not inconvenienced, we tried to stop the attacks as quickly as possible by blocking related IP addresses. But the comment spammers automatically switch their IP addresses when they no longer have access to the server, then renew their attacks with vigour. After several attempts to stop these attacks, we froze comment posting on our webblogs but this did not lesson the attacks. Instead, they punished us by intensifying their attacks, repeatedly pulling all content from our databases and forcing us to pay for high bandwidth.
We have reluctantly decided to to stop serving these news weblogs, and are in the process of shifting all history content into the protected confines of Canadawiki.
We hope this is a temporary measure, and hope to restore our weblog news services as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.
