Schools currently pay about $300-400 per student a year for textbooks. With bulk purchasing, the price of laptops is dropping into that range.

The new emerging laptop schools look something like this:
  • 1) These laptop schools have given up purchasing traditional big-brick textbooks, and instead are spending their funds on library materials, laptops and online resources;
  • 2) Each student is provided with a laptop, which is maintained by the school IT Department; the machine usually stays in the school, but senior students have the option of taking it home.
  • 3) Each laptop has wireless network access, so classroom use is allowed for study periods.
  • 4) The school has several "Internet Cafes", including the library. These are wireless hotspots where students can work on their projects and research.
  • 5) Full Web access is optional for senior students; otherwise students use subscribed content provided by the library/information centre, and by teachers and curriculum experts.
  • 6) School buses are equipped with wireless Internet access.
  • 7) Students can access the school infocentre from home using their library or student card.
  • 8) Schools provide IT support for parents who want it.
